Why these books
When I was a girl on our farm in Lancaster County, there was no supermarket at the end of the lane and no electricity in the house. There was a cellar under the kitchen, a garden behind the wash house, and a long pantry shelf my mother kept as neat as a church pew.
Mamm fed nine of us on a small farm income, and she wrote down how in a plain ledger book. Those ledgers sat in my cedar chest for more than sixty years. These books are what's in them: the pantry, the suppers, the canning, and the hundred small habits that kept our family fed, clothed and out of debt.
You don't need a farm or a bonnet to use them. You need a cupboard, a few good jars, a pencil, and the willingness to waste a little less than you did last week.
The Cedar Chest Collection
Each book stands on its own, and together they cover the whole round of a frugal home: what to keep, what to cook, how to put it by, and how to run the house.

What you'll be able to do
Meet Grandma Clara
I was born in the winter of 1944 on a quiet family farm in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. My mother, Mamm, kept a ledger of everything: what the cellar held, what the bushels cost, how one chicken could feed a family for three days.
I've kept the old ways where they still serve. Where science has learned something my mother didn't know, like safe canning times, I've said so plainly, because Mamm never once put pride ahead of her family's safety, and I won't either.
God bless your home,
Grandma Clara
